The event was well attended, not to mention that it involved two very worthwhile causes.

We at SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Jax NE were proud to take advantage of the opportunity to support Barnabas, a non-profit organization operating in Nassau county, which does many good works in our community. For those not familiar with Barnabas, they provide health services, crisis assistance and food programs that help people get back on their feet after crisis.

Coronavirus Task Force Guidelines: 15 Days to Slow the Spread

3/18/2020 (Permalink)

Earlier this week, President Trump and the White House Coronavirus Task Force issued new guidelines to help protect Americans during the global Coronavirus outbreak.

The new recommendations are simple to follow but are expected to have a resounding impact on public health. Entitled "15 Days to Slow the Spread," they include:

  1. Listen to and follow the directions of your state and local authorities.
  2. If you feel sick, stay home. Do not go to work. Contact your medical provider.
  3. If your children are sick, keep them at home. Contact your medical provider.
  4. If someone in your household has tested positive for the Coronavirus, keep the entire household at home.
  5. If you are an older American, stay home and away from other people.
  6. If you are a person with a serious underlying health condition—such as a significant heart or lung problem—stay home and away from other people.

These guidelines build on the CDC’s general recommendations to help prevent spread of the virus. Americans should continue practicing strict personal hygiene, including washing hands regularly for at least 20 seconds at a time and wiping down surfaces in the home often.

First Responders (Police, Firefighters, EMTs, and Paramedics) put their lives on the line every day for people they don’t even know. While everyone else is running away, they’re running towards the danger. Now we honor our local heroes with a special day of their own: National First Responders Day.

A resolution was passed in the U.S. Senate in 2017 that designates October 28 as “Honoring the Nation’s First Responders Day.” An estimated 4.6 million career and volunteer firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians, and paramedic workers serve communities all across the nation, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

With National First Responders Day coming up next week, SERVPRO of Fernandina Beach/Jacksonville Northeast took the opportunity to recognize the contributions of first responders by visiting the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department to present appreciation gift bags. Here, Sales and Marketing Representative, Cory Palmer, is shown presenting the gift bags to two members of the department.

Fireworks: Fourth of July Safety in Fernandina Beach/North Jacksonville

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

Who knew? Sparklers were the number one cause of fireworks-related injuries in 2017.

Source: Consumer Product Safety Commission

As families and friends gather for the Fourth of July holiday at backyard barbecues, cookouts and pool parties, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is reminding consumers to celebrate safely when using fireworks. At a recent press conference, CPSC announced that eight fireworks-related deaths were reported in 2017. There were an estimated 12,900 emergency room-treated fireworks-related injuries in 2017. About 70% of these occurred during the month surrounding the Fourth of July holiday. Surprisingly, sparklers were the number one cause of injuries, accounting for 14% of the estimated injuries.

Consumers who decide to purchase consumer fireworks are urged to follow these safety steps.

  • Make sure consumer fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
  • Never use and make professional-grade fireworks.
  • Do not buy or use fireworks that are packaged in brown paper; this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and are not for consumer use.
  • Never allow young children to play or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. This is hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person or occupied area.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move away from them quickly.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device.

Enjoy your Fourth of July holiday, and be sure to stay safe!

SERVPRO Contributes Restoration Services for AAU Yulee Basketball Teams

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

The AAU Nassau BallerZ and other local teams are once again able to play basketball in their practice facility at Yulee Sports Complex.

When the Yulee Sports Complex did repairs that included replacement of entry doors, the installation involved cutting concrete that generated a significant amount of dust in the gymnasium. In fact, the patina of dust throughout the whole structure was so pronounced that the players of the Yulee Basketball Association/Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) were slipping and sliding on the basketball court as they tried to scrimmage.

SERVPRO of Fernandina Beach/Jacksonville Northeast stepped in to save the day. A four-person team spent a day HEPA-vacuuming and wiping down the entire 6000 sq. ft. facility. When they were done, it had never looked better. It literally sparkled!

Following is a post from the AAU Nassau BallerZ Facebook page…

“Thank you to SERVPRO of Fernandina Beach/Jacksonville Northeast for voluntarily stepping up and thoroughly cleaning up the sports complex gym after the recent construction. Thank you for recognizing the need for a safe playing environment.”

More About the Amateur Athletic Union

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU)has been raising champions for more than a century. Since its inception in 1888, the AAU has set the standard for amateur sports in the United States with one goal in mind: “Sports For All, Forever.” It is more than a motto – it has been the focus and drive of AAU for 130 years and counting for sports in the United States and throughout the world.

One of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, multi-sport event organizations in the world, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. Nearly 700,000 members and 150,000 volunteers now share the AAU philosophy of “Sports For All, Forever” across 41 sports programs and 55 U.S. districts.

SERVPRO of Fernandina Beach/Jacksonville Northeast is proud to support this outstanding organization that encourages youth to be active in sports and physical activities.

Looking Back at 2017 With Gratitude: Thank You from SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax

12/19/2017 (Permalink)

We at SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The holiday season offers us a special opportunity to extend our personal thanks to our friends, our customers, our neighbors and all of those we come into contact with throughout the year. As the year ends, we think about all we are grateful for. Our relationship with you is something we very much appreciate.

As we look back on 2017, we have seen much change in our community and one challenge we’ve all had to live with is being struck by two majors hurricanes in the past two years. In the restoration business, we see first-hand how devastating these storms can be. They change the face of our community, and the lives and homes of all of the people affected.

We were called in to help many of you recover from the storm, and we did our best to do so with haste and compassion. Some of you are still recovering and we continue to do our best to help. Please call on us if you have lingering storm problems.

We welcome the opportunity to serve you. Though it may be under unpleasant conditions when we do so, we strive to help you get through these situations as painlessly as possible. We understand that we may be the last people you want to see, but we will be here when you need us. We’ve been through a lot together, and together we will weather all storms.

So it is now that we wish to you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope that peace, prosperity, and happiness be yours throughout the holidays and in years to come.

Gratefully,

SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax

Tips to Keep Kids Safe Over the Holidays

11/27/2017 (Permalink)

Natural Christmas trees can pose fire hazards. Make sure your tree has plenty of water by checking it regularly.

As you get ready for the holidays, here are some tips to keep in mind, from Safe Kids Worldwide.

Decorate Your Tree With Your Kids in Mind

Kids are curious and will want to play with the ornaments on the tree, so you might as well prepare. Move the ornaments that are breakable or have metal hooks towards the top of the tree. That makes room at the bottom for the ones that are safer for young kids.

Water the Tree Regularly

Natural trees look beautiful and smell great, but if they’re not watered regularly, needles can dry out and pose a potential fire hazard. Make sure your tree has plenty of water by checking it regularly.

Check the Lights

Lights are one of the best parts of holiday decorating. Take a look at the ones on your tree and in and around your home for exposed or frayed wires, loose connections or broken sockets.

Blow Out Candles and Store Matches Out of Reach

Keep holiday candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, and don’t forget to blow them out when you leave the room or before you go to sleep.

Make a habit of placing matches and lighters in a safe place, out of children's reach. Avoid novelty lighters or lighters that look like toys.

Keep Harmful Plants Out of Reach

Plants can spruce up your holiday decorating, but keep those that may be poisonous out of reach of children or pets. This includes mistletoe berries, holly berry, and Jerusalem cherry.

SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax wishes you a safe and joyous Holiday Season.

SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax is Grateful for Nassau County Council on Aging

11/6/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax applauds The Nassau County Council of Aging for their outstanding work for the seniors in our community.

We at SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax would like to express our appreciation to the Nassau County Council on Aging (NCCOA) for the outstanding work that they do to better the lives of older adults in our community. We would also like to thank this organization for calling on SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax for help when storms like Hurricane Irma damage their facilities and threaten their ability to perform their much-needed services. We were honored to help them out.

So the purpose of this blog is to thank this outstanding organization and spread the word about the good work they do in our community. Here is some background information on the Council.

About the Nassau County Council on Aging

Mission

To enhance the lives of older adults through services and compassionate care designed to improve the health, independence and economic security of Nassau County seniors and their families.

Purpose

To provide targeted services of comprehensive, compassionate care that not only foster independence, but also help our clients remain active, valued members of their community.

Founded in 1974 by local citizens, the Nassau County Council on Aging is a non-profit organization whose goal is to maintain and enrich the lives of older citizens throughout Nassau County. NCCOA’s programs enable those age 60 and older to live independently at home while also providing opportunities for companionship, and activities geared toward the needs of seniors. NCCOA is a resource for education, information, referral, counseling and general assistance.

Senior Life Centers in Fernandina Beach and Hilliard offer those 60 and older assistance, information and support, as well as a variety of fun and engaging activities, plus opportunities to socialize.

NCCOA delivers critical services to Nassau County seniors in five major categories: Meals on Wheels, Home Health Services, NassauTRANSIT, Adult Day HealthCare and the two Senior Life Centers we operate: the East Nassau Center in Fernandina Beach and the West Nassau Center in Hilliard.

Service offerings include:

  • Educational programs and classes about health, nutrition, home safety, low vision support and much more.
  • Presentations and seminars on topics of interest to senior citizens – Social Security and Medicare, senior fraud and advanced directives – just to name a few.
  • Structured exercise with trainers from the YMCA; musical presentations by the M&M Singers, Song Spinners, and other musicians; arts and crafts with local artists; card games; Bingo three times a week, and computer classes.
  • Medical screenings as well as health and wellness programs on diabetes, blood pressure and dental health.
  • A chance to socialize and share companionship each day at the Senior Life Center and during picnics, planned outings, holiday parties and field trips.
  • A hot noon-time meal and snacks.
  • A Geriatric Care Manager available to provide support to ALL Nassau County senior citizens, regardless of income, as they navigate the maze of healthcare, insurance and social services

NCCOA’s Circle of Friends program offers many flexible opportunities for volunteering, from donations, to visits or weekly phone calls made to homebound seniors, to minor home repairs or yard clean-up, to delivery of meals, and assistance with use of emergency call pendants. To volunteer, call 904.261.0701.

Again, we at SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax applaud the efforts of the Nassau County Council of Aging facilities and encourage local residents to visit their facilities and lend a helping hand with their good work. At this Thanksgiving season, they are a group we can all be thankful for.

Keeping Your Little Monsters Safe: Halloween Fire Safety Tips

10/26/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax wants to help keep your little trick-or-treaters safe this Halloween.

Halloween is a fun, and spooky time of year for kids. Make trick-or-treating safe for your little monsters with a few easy safety tips.

  • Use flashlights as alternatives to candles or torch lights when decorating walkways and yards. They are much safer for trick-or- treaters, whose costumes may brush against the lighting.
  • If your children are going to Halloween parties at others’ homes, have them look for ways out of the home and plan how they would get out in an emergency.
  • When choosing a costume, stay away from billowing or long trailing fabric. If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see out.
  • Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume.
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs, and heaters.
  • It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle in a jack-o-lantern. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit. When lighting candles inside jack-o-lanterns, use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Tell children to stay away from open flames.
  • Be sure your kids know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire. (Have them practice, stopping immediately, dropping to the ground, covering their face with hands, and rolling over and over to put the flames out.)

Did you know?

Decorations are the first thing to ignite in 900 reported home fires each year. Two of every five of these fires were started by a candle.

Halloween Safety in Nassau County & North Jax

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

Dewey our mascot Duck says, "Have fun and be safe on Halloween!"

Decorating for Halloween can bring out creativity in everyone, but many elements of Halloween decorating can pose hazards to unsuspecting visitors. Now is the time to make your home safe for trick-or-treaters. We have gathered some information for you:

  • Consider candy choices: No doubt buying Halloween candy is fun, but keep in mind that not all candy is appropriate for every child. Avoid candy that poses a choking hazard for toddlers, and keep in mind that a number of children have peanut allergies. Even if the candy doesn’t contain peanuts, it could be made in a facility that handles peanuts. Check the candy bag’s label for a peanut allergy warning. Also, consider toys and other options for children with other allergies.
  • Say “No” to knives: Don’t let your children handle sharp carving knives and keep an eye on them while you’re carving. If possible, purchase specific tools that are geared just for pumpkin carving (for your safety, too!). If the kids really want to participate in the carving, you can let them make the pattern or poke the pumpkin flesh in after you’ve done the carving.
  • Reconsider the candles: A glowing jack-o’-lantern makes your home warm and welcoming to candy seekers, but using a candle to illuminate a pumpkin can be dangerous. Costumes, paper decorations and ornamental straw can easily catch on fire. Instead of a traditional candle, use one powered by batteries or buy a bunch of glow sticks readily available at any party supply or discount store and place them inside your jack-o’-lanterns. They cast an eerie green glow and are safe all around.
  • Pay attention: Never leave a candle anywhere unattended, and never leave burning candles where anyone can reach them or accidentally knock them over.
  • Blazing fires aren’t allowed: Keep a fire extinguisher handy. You never know when a gourd will go up in smoke.
  • Secure the perimeters: Make sure that all props hanging, dangling, draped, staked, or set are steadily secured. Where there will be foot traffic, tape down loose wires with duct tape. You don’t want people to trip. And check these places often during the course of the evening for any loose edges that need fixing.
  • Follow the package directions: If a package of lights says that they’re only for indoor use, don’t string them outside. Read the fog machine directions. Take every precaution when it comes to decorating with materials you’re not familiar with.
  • Secure your railings: Young children, and the adults who often accompany them, will need the security and support of railings while climbing steps to get to your front door. If you’ve been putting off fixing that rickety railing, it’s time to get out the toolbox and make it secure.
  • Make room in the garage: If you’re headed out on Halloween, clean out the garage and store your car securely in it. From teen antics to serious vehicle vandalism and theft, your car is best kept in the garage on Halloween.
  • Clear walkways: Trick-or-treaters are too busy counting candy to pay close attention to where they’re walking, so it’s critical to survey your yard for potential trip and slip hazards. Be sure your yard is free of tripping hazards like hoses and sprinklers, clear walkways of loose gravel, and be sure to clean moss off steps. If your home has an irrigation system, turn the system off well in advance of the big night so your lawn and walkways have a chance to dry.
  • Use lots of lights: A dimly lit entryway helps set the spooky mood of Halloween, but it’s also increases the chance of an accident. Make sure the exterior lights of your home are working, and consider turning on flood lights to illuminate the darkest areas of your yard. Even if you’re not going to be home, leave on lights for safety reasons and to dissuade unsavory characters from vandalizing your home. And, if you won’t be there, make sure you set your security system, just to be safe.
  • Contain your pets: Barking dogs not only scare trick-or-treaters of every age away, they also present a danger. A dog that breaks away from your home might not bite, but he could knock down a toddler or scare a teen right into the street, causing even more danger. Keep all pets securely confined inside your home until the hustle and bustle of the night has passed.

We at SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax wish all of you a very Happy Halloween!

Tropical system may impact Florida coast in next 10 days

10/4/2017 (Permalink)

The low pressure evolving over the Western Caribbean & Central America has been upgraded to tropical depression #16 and will likely become Nate.

With Hurricane Irma barely behind us, meteorologists advise that tropical weather may not be over for Floridians this hurricane season, which does not end until late November. Here’s what Accuweather said earlier this week.

The tropical Atlantic Basin has turned quiet for now, but new tropical threats may pose hazards across the western Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico or near Florida well into October.

Following Lee and Maria’s departure, the Atlantic Basin is now void of any named tropical systems, something that hasn’t happened since Aug. 23.

With nearly two months left in the hurricane season, there is still plenty of time for new tropical systems to form and it could happen as soon as late week.

“Multiple factors will be in place that may favor several tropical systems to come about into the middle of October,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.

A large, slowly-spinning area of showers and thunderstorms hovering near Central America and the western Caribbean will be worth watching over the next couple of weeks. This feature, known as the Central American Gyre, may spin up tropical systems if the right conditions are present.

Residents and those with interests in Central America, Cuba, the Bahamas, Mexico and the southeastern United States will want to keep a watchful eye on this over the next couple of weeks.

“Waters over much of the region are very warm and likely to stay warm for many weeks,” Sosnowski said.

"A tropical depression or storm could develop with little notice in the western Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico or in waters along the Southern Atlantic coast of the United States."

Should a tropical system form in this region, the warm water would provide the necessary fuel for the system to maintain itself and even flourish.

However, much of this will depend on wind shear, or the changing of speed and direction of winds at different layers of the atmosphere. While wind shear will be disruptive at times through the month of October over this area, there will also be times where it relaxes enough for a tropical system to form.

Latest Update from WOKV Jacksonville: The low pressure evolving over the Western Caribbean & Central America has been upgraded to tropical depression #16 and will likely become Nate.

SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jacksonville advises local residents to re-supply their emergency kits and stay current on weather reports in the meantime.

Nassau County/North Jax: Prepare for Hurricane Irma

9/5/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax urges you to follow these tips to prepare for Hurricane Irma.

SERVPRO Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jax wants everyone to be prepared for Hurricane Irma; Our partner, the American Red Cross, offers these tips to help you get ready.

  • Talk with your family about what to do if the hurricane strikes. Discussing hurricanes ahead of time helps reduce fear, particularly for younger children.
  • Make sure you have access to NOAA radio broadcasts. Find an online NOAA radio station. Search for a NOAA radio app in your app store. Purchase a battery-powered or hand-crank NOAA radio in the Red Cross Store.
  • Keep insurance policies, documents, and other valuables in a safe-deposit box. You may need quick, easy access to these documents. Keep them in a safe place less likely to be damaged if a hurricane causes flooding.
  • Take pictures on a phone and keep copies of important documents and files on a flash drive that you can carry with you on your house or car keys.
  • Protect windows with permanent storm shutters or invest in one-half inch marine plywood that is pre-cut to fit your doors and windows.
  • Identify a place to store lawn furniture, toys, gardening tools and trash cans (away from stairs and exits) to prevent them from being moved by high winds and possibly hurting someone.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts to prevent flooding and unnecessary pressure on the awnings.

The Katie Ride is an annual fundraiser created in 2005 to raise awareness for organ donation and support the Katie Caples Foundation nationally recognized organ donor education program. It is a premier bicycle touring event catering to cyclists of all abilities.

The 13th anniversary of the event is Saturday, April 22, 2017, which will again be held on beautiful Amelia Island, where Katie Caples called home. Despite her tragic death at age 17 in a car accident, Katie went on to save the lives of five individuals through the gift of organ donation.

More than 125,000 adults and children in the United States are currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. On average, 21 people will die each day in the United States due to a lack of available organs for transplant. And while 90% of Americans say they support organ donation, less than 44% are currently registered. Funds raised through this event support the Katie Caples Foundation and its mission to increase the number of registered organ donors to eliminate the wait for individuals on the national transplant list.

SERVPRO of Fernandina Beach/Yulee/North Jacksonville is pleased to participate in this very worthy cause. For more information or to participate, see www.katiecaples.org.
